Flemington House

An integrated internal-external reconfiguration in response to a young family’s need for more thoughtfully connected living spaces.

An existing weatherboard house was reconfigured internally to connect the living spaces to a new rear courtyard, garden and external studio, whilst also providing a new centralised bathroom, kitchen and laundry layout. Generous openings to the exterior ensure a seamless flow from inside to out, and draw an abundance of natural light into the new kitchen and living zone.

The previously inefficient rear yard, scattered across three stepped levels has been consolidated into a multi-functional and generous outdoor area with the covered entertaining courtyard flowing directly from the house, stepping up to a green, uncovered garden/car space. Framing both of these zones and providing a complimentary and material counterpoint to the house is a new backyard studio, able to provide a private working space or accommodation for visiting family members.
